A Greener Stay: Treehouse London Awarded Prestigious Green Key Eco-Certification

Treehouse London has officially been awarded the Green Key eco-certification—an internationally recognised mark of excellence in sustainable hospitality. This milestone places us among a select group of hotels globally (and one of just a few in Central London) with certified green credentials.

From the rooftop views above Langham Place to the everyday moments behind the scenes, we’ve worked hard to embed sustainability into every corner of our guest experience. With guidance from Mission: Net Zero and the dedication of our in-house green team, led by General Manager Spencer Yeo, Treehouse London introduced impactful initiatives to cut carbon, conserve water, reduce waste, source responsibly, and support the local community and core actions that helped us earn Green Key certification.

And we’re not done yet. This is just one step in our growing canopy of eco-conscious efforts. From rethinking resources to cultivating partnerships with impact, we’re committed to keeping sustainability at the heart of everything we do. This achievement is an important milestone, but just one step in our growing canopy of green practices. As we continue to evolve and deepen our impact, we spoke with one of the leaders helping shape that journey.

In Conversation: Pranav Jampani, Vice President of Sustainability & Impact, Starwood Hotels

What were the biggest challenges or learnings during the journey toward earning Green Key certification?

One of the most important learnings from our Green Key certification journey was the value of structure and collaboration. Achieving a globally recognized eco-label isn’t about ticking boxes, it’s about embedding sustainability into the DNA of a hotel’s daily operations, culture, and guest experience.
Treehouse London has always placed sustainability at the heart of its operations from sourcing reclaimed materials and eliminating single-use plastics to engaging guests in low-impact stays. The Green Key certification process affirmed the strength of these efforts. The journey was about validating and celebrating the everyday decisions our teams already make often behind the scenes that reflect our long-standing values.

One key takeaway was the importance of alignment across departments. Whether it's engineering tracking energy and water use, housekeeping repurposing linens, or F&B using waste data to refine prep, each team plays a role. The process reaffirmed that when sustainability is embedded from the ground up, recognition follows naturally. It deepened our teams’ understanding of how to drive sustainability in a holistic, meaningful way.

What made Green Key a particularly meaningful recognition for Treehouse London’s sustainability practices?

Green Key resonated with us because it reflects real-world hospitality operations. It’s a commitment to ongoing improvement and recognizes hotels that live their values consistently, from heart-of-house systems to guest-facing experiences. It reflects how deeply embedded sustainability is in our brand philosophy. For Treehouse London, receiving this certification validated the efforts of our Green Team, engineering crew, housekeeping staff, and every team member who contributes behind the scenes to make eco-conscious hospitality a reality.

It’s meaningful to earn a certification that mirrors the work we’ve already been doing. From refillable water stations and upcycled interiors to community volunteering and waste tracking, Treehouse London operates with purpose. Green Key captured that reality and gave our teams the recognition they deserve.

How does receiving this certification reflect and reinforce our broader sustainability goals?

This certification reinforces our purpose we hold across all our brands at Starwood Hotels: improve the planet one hotel at a time. Treehouse London’s certification is a clear reflection of that ethos. At Starwood Hotels, we’re creating systems and cultures that prioritize environmental and social impact across every brand and property.  It also aligns with our larger ambitions, including contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and advancing along the pathway to Net Positive Hospitality. It’s about more than environmental metrics. It's about guest experience, team culture, and community engagement, all areas where Treehouse continues to lead. The Green Key certification underscores that the way we operate day-to-day is both impactful and industry leading. It’s a meaningful signal that we’re on the right track and a motivator to go even further.

Can you share a specific initiative—such as waste reduction, water conservation, or responsible sourcing—that had a measurable impact in helping us earn this recognition?

One standout initiative was our approach to overall waste management. By leveraging the Foodprint zero waste programs, our team was able to track, analyze, and actively reduce waste across our operations. This digital tool provided actionable insights that helped us reduce unnecessary waste, divert as much waste as possible from the landfills/incinerators, and execute more sustainable events. It’s a great example of how data supports intention, offering transparency and driving small, continual improvements. Few impactful initiatives we implemented include refillable water stations on every floor, refillable toiletry systems, plastic-free amenities etc. throughout the hotel. These efforts not only minimized plastic waste but also helped us conserve resources while offering a more thoughtful guest experience. From upcycled furniture to repurposing or donating spent linens, Treehouse London has embraced a circular mindset turning sustainability into creativity and measurable progress.
